What Causes Acne?

Acne occurs when pores are clogged with oil (sebum), dead skin and bacteria. Inflammation then produces different lesion types — comedones, papules, pustules, nodules and cysts.

Triggers include hormonal changes, stress/sleep, occlusive cosmetics and, in some individuals, high-GI diets.

Common contributing factors

  • Increased sebum and sticky dead skin cells

  • Overgrowth of Cutibacterium acnes

  • Hormonal changes (teens, adult females)

  • Heat/humidity and sweat (common in SG)

  • Certain medications or products (comedogenic)

How Doctors Treat Acne in Singapore (Overview)

Your treatment plan is personalised after assessment. Depending on acne type and severity, we may combine:

  • Topicals: retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, azelaic/salicylic acid; topical clascosterone, short antibiotic courses where appropriate

  • Oral medication: antibiotics; selected cases may consider isotretinoin with monitoring of blood tests (doctor-supervised); women may consider hormonal options

  • Clinic procedures:

    • yellow laser for oil control and pore purification

    • PICO laser for, hyperpigmentation (dark brown spots), scars and resurfacing

    • Chemical peels to unclog pores and to reduce hyperpigmentation

    • LED blue/red light therapy to calm inflammation

    • Medical facials to deep-clean with minimal extraction

    • CO2 laser for skin resurfacing

Which Acne Treatment is Right for me? (By Severity)

There are many different acne treatments available. From at home treatments to oral medications and medical treatments, the best acne treatment is to seek out a reputable skin clinic to ensure a proper diagnosis.

Due to the different types of acne, acne treatment is categorised into 3 groups to treat:

  • Mild (comedones): salicylic/glycolic chemical peelHydrafacial, skincare; consider LED adjuncts

  • Moderate (papules/pustules): Yellow laser or specialised acne laser + topicals; short course oral antibiotics if indicated

  • Severe/nodulocystic: physician‑supervised oral medications; consider procedural add‑ons case‑by‑case

  • Back acne (truncal): often needs longer treatment; laser/peel + appropriate topicals and hygiene
