Tattoo Removal in Singapore with PicoSure Pro
Tattoos can hold meaning at one stage of life and feel very different at another. Whether you would like to remove an unwanted tattoo, lighten it before a cover-up or fade a small area of ink, treatment should be planned around your tattoo, not approached with a one-setting-fits-all protocol.
At Emberwood Aesthetics, our doctor-led tattoo removal treatments use PicoSure® Pro picosecond laser technology. Each plan is personalised according to your skin tone, tattoo colours, size, ink density, location, age and any existing scar tissue.
How Does Laser Tattoo Removal Work?
Tattoo ink sits within the deeper layers of the skin, which is why creams and surface treatments cannot reliably remove it.
PicoSure Pro delivers ultra-short laser pulses measured in picoseconds. These rapid pulses create a pressure-based effect that fragments selected tattoo pigment into smaller particles. Your body then gradually clears these fragments through its natural immune processes over the weeks following treatment.
Only a portion of the ink is treated and cleared at each session. This is why laser tattoo removal is a gradual process rather than a one-session procedure.
Why Do We Use PicoSure Pro for Tattoo Removal?
PicoSure Pro is a medical picosecond laser designed for tattoo and pigment treatments. Its 755 nm wavelength is particularly useful for targeting black, blue and green tattoo inks, including colours that may respond less readily to some traditional tattoo lasers.
Advantages of PicoSure Pro include:
Picosecond pulses that fragment tattoo pigment with a strong photoacoustic effect
Adjustable energy and spot sizes for tattoos of different dimensions and ink densities
Precision when treating small details or selected sections of a tattoo
The ability to customise treatment as the tattoo becomes lighter over successive sessions
Less reliance on prolonged heat than older laser technologies, although temporary skin inflammation and downtime should still be expected
Different ink colours absorb different laser wavelengths. Red, orange, yellow, white, flesh-toned and some cosmetic tattoo pigments may require a different wavelength, a combination approach or a test spot. During your consultation, Dr Jolenda will assess whether PicoSure Pro is appropriate for each colour present rather than promising that one laser can remove every pigment equally.
Why Does Experience Matter in Tattoo Removal?
No two tattoos behave in exactly the same way. A small amateur black tattoo, a dense professional tattoo and a layered multicoloured cover-up can require very different settings, endpoints and treatment timelines. Skin tone, body location, scarring and previous laser treatment also influence safety and response.
In addition to her clinical practice, Dr Jolenda Ang volunteers with a tattoo removal rehabilitation programme at Changi Prison. Through this service, she has gained practical experience assessing and treating tattoos of different colours, sizes and densities, including extensive tattoos that require careful staged treatment.
She brings the same considered approach to every patient at Emberwood Aesthetics: realistic expectations, individualised laser settings, close attention to skin response and respect for the personal reason behind each tattoo removal journey.
Which Tattoos Can Be Treated?
We can assess:
Professional and amateur tattoos
Small, medium and larger tattoos
Black, blue, green and multicoloured tattoos
Older, faded or previously treated tattoos
Dense or layered tattoos and cover-ups
Tattoos that only need partial fading before a new cover-up
Selected cosmetic tattoos, subject to pigment assessment and test-spotting where appropriate
Large tattoos may be divided into sections so that treatment and healing remain manageable. Some colours or pigment formulations may not be suitable for PicoSure Pro alone, and treatment will only be recommended where the expected benefit justifies the risk.
How Many Tattoo Removal Sessions Will I Need?
Most tattoos require a course of treatments. It is not possible to guarantee the exact number from a photograph alone, and complete clearance cannot be promised.
The number of sessions depends on:
Ink colour and chemical composition
Whether the tattoo is amateur or professionally applied
Tattoo size, depth and density
Whether it is a cover-up or contains several layers of ink
Tattoo age and the degree of natural fading already present
Location on the body and local circulation
Your skin tone and tendency to develop pigmentation changes
Existing scarring or previous tattoo removal treatment
Your immune response and how the tattoo fades between sessions
Some tattoos respond noticeably after a few treatments, while dense, layered or multicoloured tattoos may require many more. Sessions are commonly spaced around six to eight weeks apart, or longer when needed, to allow the skin to heal and the body time to clear fragmented pigment.
Does PicoSure Pro Tattoo Removal Hurt?
Most people describe laser tattoo removal as a rapid snapping or prickling sensation. Tattoo removal generally requires more energy than a routine facial pico laser treatment, so some discomfort is expected.
Comfort measures will be discussed based on the tattoo's size, location and your sensitivity. Treatment time may range from a few minutes for a very small tattoo to longer for a larger or more complex area.
What Is the Common Downtime After Tattoo Removal?
Tattoo removal has more visible downtime than a gentle pico laser facial. The exact response depends on the tattoo, treatment intensity, body area and individual healing.
Immediately after treatment
Temporary whitening or “frosting” over the tattoo
Redness, warmth, swelling and tenderness
Mild pinpoint bleeding may occasionally occur
Over the next few days
Redness or swelling may persist for one to three days
Small blisters can occur and do not necessarily mean that the skin is infected
The area may feel dry, tight or itchy
Crusting or scabbing may develop as the skin heals
Typical recovery period
Many treated areas settle within approximately three to seven days, but blistered, more intensively treated or larger areas may take one to two weeks to heal fully. Temporary darkening or lightening of the skin may last longer, particularly after sun exposure or in skin that is prone to post-inflammatory pigmentation.
Do not peel scabs or burst blisters, as this can increase the risk of infection, scarring and pigment changes. Contact the clinic if pain or redness is worsening rather than improving, or if you develop spreading redness, pus, fever or unusually large blisters.
How Should I Care for My Skin After Tattoo Removal?
Aftercare instructions may be adjusted to the treatment area, but usually include:
Keep the area clean and follow the dressing or ointment instructions provided
Avoid picking, rubbing, scratching or bursting blisters
Avoid swimming, saunas, hot baths and activities that create significant friction while the skin is healing
Reduce strenuous exercise for the period advised if heat, sweat or rubbing affects the treated site
Protect the area from direct sun and use suitable sun protection once the skin surface has healed
Avoid applying acids, retinoids, scrubs or fragranced products to the treated area until it has recovered
Good aftercare is an important part of reducing infection, scarring and post-inflammatory pigmentation risk.
What Are the Possible Risks of Laser Tattoo Removal?
Common temporary effects include discomfort, redness, swelling, frosting, blistering, pinpoint bleeding, crusting and itching.
Less common risks include:
Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation
Infection
Prolonged redness or sensitivity
Textural change or scarring
Incomplete clearance, residual “ghosting” or uneven fading
An inflammatory or allergic response to fragmented tattoo pigment
Darkening of certain cosmetic, white or flesh-toned pigments
Risk cannot be removed completely, but careful tattoo assessment, conservative wavelength and setting selection, appropriate spacing and good aftercare help reduce avoidable complications.
What Happens During Your Tattoo Removal Consultation?
Dr Jolenda will assess:
Your skin type and pigmentation risk
Every visible colour within the tattoo
Tattoo size, density, depth, age and location
Whether it is layered, scarred or previously lasered
Whether your goal is maximum clearance or partial fading for a cover-up
Medical conditions, medications and healing history relevant to laser treatment
You will then receive a personalised recommendation, expected downtime and a realistic treatment range. A test spot may be advised for uncertain pigments, cosmetic tattoos or skin with a higher risk of pigment change.
Frequently Asked Questions
about Tattoo Removal
-
Some tattoos can fade very substantially, but complete removal cannot be guaranteed. The final result depends on ink composition, colour, depth, density, layering, body location and your individual response. A faint outline, altered texture or residual pigment may remain.
-
PicoSure Pro's 755 nm wavelength is particularly suited to black, blue and green inks. Other colours may need a different wavelength or combination plan. White, flesh-toned and some cosmetic pigments require extra caution because they may darken after laser exposure.
-
Yes, large tattoos can be assessed, but treatment may be divided into sections. Staging the area can make treatment, aftercare and healing more manageable.
-
Yes. Many patients only need enough fading to give their tattoo artist more flexibility with a new design. Tell us your intended cover-up plan during the consultation so the laser treatment can be targeted accordingly.
-
Laser tattoo removal may be performed in a range of skin tones, but darker skin contains more competing melanin and may have a higher risk of hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation. Settings, wavelength selection, treatment intervals and sometimes test spots should be individualised.
-
Selected cosmetic tattoos may be treated, but their pigments can behave unpredictably. Iron- or titanium-containing pigments may darken when exposed to laser. An assessment and test spot may be recommended before treating the full area.
-
Sessions are often scheduled at least six to eight weeks apart, and sometimes longer. The next treatment should only proceed once the skin has fully recovered and the response to the previous session can be assessed.
-
This depends on the location and intensity of treatment. Heat, sweat and friction can irritate newly treated skin, so you may be advised to pause strenuous exercise for a short period and resume once the area is comfortable and protected.
